Breakfast at Warorot Market, Chiang Mai

We reached Chiang Mai on Saturdy at the 5.30 A.M., early in morning, by Sahacharn Tour Bus (not recommended, old bus, bad snack and bad food) and immediately we went to the Nakhonchai air bus station and booked the return ticket for Bangkok on Sunday night. I had not much time to stay in Chiang Mai until the Loy Krathong or Yee Peng days. So sad because I have never joined the Loy Krathong festival in Chiang Mai before.

We hired a Red Song Thaew (red taxi) and went to The Empress Hotel for acheck- in. After having unpacked everything, we decided to have a breakfast in the morning at Warorot Market. I remember the delicious “Moo Yaw Thawd”(fried Northern Thai pork sausage , normally a cylindrical block of 2 inches in diametre and 6 to 8 inches long.)and “Naem Tawd” ( fried Thai sour sausage)with steamed sticky rice. Wow….how wonderful it was!!

We headed to Warorot Market by a Red Song Thaew with 10 baht each for the fare. In the morning, the market was already full of people. Warorot Market or “Kaad Luang” called by the local. “Kaad” in Thai Northern dialect means “market”. Warorot Market is a must visit market for buying souvenirs; the most famous souvenirs here are the Northern Style Foods. “Kaeb Moo” (the crispy fried pig skin), “Moo Yaw” the traditional Northern Thai pork sausage, “Nam Prik Num”(Northern Thai green chilly sauce- a little hot ) and the other traditional northern style sauces.Thes are is a must try items.

Warorot Market is also a fresh market for the local. There are many kinds of fresh vegetables from Chiang Mai. I saw a lot of fresh muchrooms which are hard to find in Bangkok. If you want to cook your own food while satying in Chianmai, Warorot Market is the best place for shopping for some good fresh stuffs.

I walked around Warorot Market for an hour, watching local life , rare hill tribe people coming down from the hills and shopping for clothing in the market. I thought that they might buy this textiles for making the hill tribe style clothing for themselves and their families. Sometimes you may see some hill tribe persons (the ones who wear a hill tribe clothe) on Khao Sarn Road, but I think that is not the real one. Maybe these fake hill tribe persons are Bangkokians who wear such clothing for a purpose.

You can also find other products such as textiles, clothings, and many more articles about the hilltribe life and Lanna products along the streets around Warorot Market. I could also find lamp and fireworks shops in the Warorot Market. The lamps in this shops are for hanging to decorate your home in the Lanna Style. The fireworks here are for the celebration in the night of Loy Krathong Festival. The lamp here is not an electric lamp but it is a candle lamp or just a lamp shade. If you would like to buy a lamp, this shop in Warorot Market has a lot of lamps for you to select.

We decided to hire a car today because we have a plan to go to Doi Suthep and some other places like Bor Sang. This may be better to hire a car than hiring a Song Thaew all day long. Tomorrow I will write about our Doi Suthep Trip.
