THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

This Hollywood-style name was originally given to an ill-defined area covering parts of northern Thailand, Laos and Burma where opium was widely produced. The drug trade still thrives, but the tourist industry has sanitized the name and now applies it to the point where the three countries meet. You’ll see the sign, the hotel, the bungalows and plenty of rafts and speedboats. Stay a while, but don’t miss Mac Sai farther on and the Burmese border check-point. You can’t cross into Burma, of course, but you’ll see some picturesque costumes coming the other way.
